Handwoven Grass Mats, Yoga Mats, Natural Fibre India
It’s amazing what talented fingers can do with grass! Take a look at Grass Mats from India and you’ll know. The exquisite designs are achieved by weaving grass on a bamboo or timber frame loom.
A variety of grasses and to some extent palm leaves are the primary material for most of the Yoga Mats made in India. The madur mats of West Bengal are woven from the thin soft madur kathi reed cultivated in Midnapore district. Dyed kora grass is used to make the beautiful Mats of Pathamadai, Tirunelveli district (Tamil Nadu), and in its undyed state it is plied into the golden korai Mats of Orissa. In Kerala they often mix kora grass with the leaves of the screwpine in very pleasing combinations. Leaves of the date and the palmyra palms are also used in many parts of India. Finest of all, however, are the sitalpatti Mats of Bengal, Assam and Tripura, for which mutra cane is soaked and then split into thin strips before it is woven into these extremely fine and flexible Yoga Mats. Women weave these mats on a bamboo- or timber-frame loom. Cotton string is generally used for the warps.

Grass Mats are good for Yoga and Meditation. These are called Yoga mats.

The Mats are made of grass that is collected from marshy areas near the rivers in September and in March. The next step in the process of weaving a grass mat is to soak the korai grass in the river. The weaver then splits the grass into fine strands for weaving which are dyed in brilliant colors.
