Indian Jewellery has existed in almost an unchanged form through the centuries, its tradition handed dwon from the ancient epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda also refer to the use of Jewellery. Each object used in society was representative of the status of the wearer and was believed to have been imbued with magical properties. In tribal society, tabeej, an amulet which has prayers inscribed on it, is said to protect the wearer from evil influences, as is jewelry inscribed with figures of local deities. Traditionally, Jewelry was (and still is) mandatory for Indian married women who were not expected to be seen without a
necklace,
earrings,anklet toe rings and
bangles. A widow was not supposed to wear the jewelry of a married woman as it was considered inauspicious.
