Paper Mache Art Indian drawings and paintings survive from prehistoric times but they are difficult to place in any firm sequence; it is difficult, too, to understand the impulses at work. How much was it magic, how much mimicry that inspired those early drawings? Miniature Painting as Living Art

Miniature Painting as a living art faded with the 19th century. Now Delhi, Varanasi, Udaipur and Jaipur have become centers for latter-day miniaturists working on paper, cloth and ivory, although this is now difficult to acquire thanks to animal protection legislation, and artists rely either on recycling old ivory or on a busy black market.

They generally use thin sheet,often made up of several carefully joined pieces, and smooth the surface with cuttle bone, a very soft natural abrasive, before Drawing a pencil sketch. When the outline is satisfactory it is inked in with a fine brush then, after drying, washed over to soften the lines. The ground color is filled in first, starting at the top, and the buildings, plants and animals added. Human figures follow; the faces, so easily damaged by the touch of a sweaty hand, are left till last. Acrylic paints are generally used, but the best work calls for natural pigments. The technique of painting on paper is very similar but here the outline is softened by covering the surface the chalk.

In contrast to the paintings of the Rathvas of Gujarat, those in Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh, are much simpler and archaic in their rendering. The absence of the royal procession, elaborate ornamentation and modernistic features such as the airplane and clock, combined with the rudimentary style of drawing, indicates that these paintings represent an earlier phase than the Gujarati ones.
Painting, in addition to its magico-religious function, serves as an important medium for the expression of folklore in India. In most parts of Rajasthan,” the interior and exterior walls of the palaces as well as common dwellingsare covered with highly ornate figures of elephants, horses, camels, scenes of royal processions, festivities, hunting parties and mythological characters and incidents. Painted on wet lime plaster in mineral colours, though in varying styles and techniques, the temples and palaces in Gujarat,Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala, radiate in the polychoromatic brilliance of their profusely painted walls.
